We’re going to talk about keyword research for the newbie which is really one of the first things that you’re gonna do in the SEO process.     
So the first thing I want to do is actually cover the basics and explain,


I’ll start by alleviating a very simple.
Now we all know that keywords or maybe you don’t know keywords are?
What you type into search engines.
The term keyword can be a single word, it’s usually not though more often it’s two three four five words or even more.
It’s a big giant phrase that a person types into a search engine to find information, services or products.
Now the term keyword is singular in the search engines and one thing you have noticed through
The evolution of SEO is that people are getting savvier when using search engines.
You know that if you type in one word you’re not gonna get what you’re looking for but if you type in more words or more specific surely gonna get better results
So that’s why we see keywords getting longer and longer over time.
You can actually break keywords into two categories based on the length.
That really brings us to our next point of talking more specifically about keywords.


The first category is short tail keywords and the other category is long tail keywords.
Short tail keywords are obviously shorter and they often have one or two maybe three words at most.
Whereas long tail keywords usually have three, four, five, six, seven or a lot of words in them.
So they’re giant phrases that people type in.
So when getting started with SEO, many people focus on those long tail keywords first because they tend to be less competitive and they yield a really high conversion rate.
Short tail keywords, they usually have a really high search volume which is great but they yield a much lower conversion rate.
You know when sometimes they’re very competitive because of the high search volume
So if you think about, it is really doesn’t make a sense.
The more specific keywords someone types in the search engine is that means, they are very close in the buying process.
When someone searches, a future homeowner in newyork
You know they’re searching using a short tail keyword like just NewYork condos as opposed to somebody who’s searching for using a long tail keyword like two-bedroom NewYork condos for sale
That’s a much bigger longer term key phrase and very specific.
A person typing in a long tail keyword like that is much closer to buying a home and knowing exactly what they’re looking for.
So that’s why it’s good to go long tail keywords with less competition and higher conversion rates.
If you’re really smart, you’re gonna be a super smart SEO person when can actually target short tail keywords inside of long tail keywords.
So kind of killing two birds with one stone.
Let’s jump ahead a little bit.



Keyword research for beginners in my opinion,
the way I’ve done it usually involves about three things.
  • First one is common sense.
  • Second is competitor analysis and
  • The third is using keyword tools.
The common sense part really is just asking yourself what would you type in search engines to find your information, your service, and your product.
It shouldn’t just stop there though it’s not good just to focus on search.
You should also do a little bit of research as well and that’s why you jump over to your competitors and start your research.
Competitor websites, this is what you look to see what keywords in their title tag, their heading tags, and throughout their contents.
It’ll be pretty obvious things you’ll notice them and once you have some ideas.
Now you’re ready to jump over and start using a keyword research tool.
There are tons of great keyword research tools for free and paid available on the web.
However, because this is an SEO for beginners guide let’s focus on Google’s keyword planner tool.
It’s free and very popular and it gets the job done
Google’s keyword planner tool is actually built for ad word users.
Those are people who are paying to advertise their site on the top of search engines or along the right-hand side and this is often referred to as SEM or search engine marketing.
This is just good to note for you beginners even it’s irrelevant.
It’s also called PPC  or pay-per-click.
So AdWords, which is Google’s version of pay-per-click, lets their users bid on keywords based on search volumes
However, the SEO people use the AdWords key planner tool as a general idea on how many keyword searches are being performed each month.
To see how many times somebody searching something per month.
Now their tool isn’t a hundred percent accurate I think.
They do that on purpose they don’t publish everything a hundred percent accurate.
So but it gives you a close gauge of which keywords are doing better.
You’ll see actual numbers so one keyword might get 500 searches the next keyword might get 200 searches per month I hope that makes sense.
The last thing I want to talk about just mentioning is the difference between in understanding local keywords right versus national or global keywords
The local keywords, you’ll notice it’s very simple and tends to usually have a city or a state inside of the keyword or phrase
Whereas the national or global keywords really don’t.
So let’s say you live in Austin Texas and you’re looking for cars, and you might type in Austin cars for sale that actually could show very different results than just searching for cars for sale.
Because you’re searching very locally and two you’re searching nationally and globally.
But Google is getting better at understanding user intents and all that means is that eventually,
You might not need to type in your seeking state but more likely for some things are going to.
It’s good for an SEO person to target locally by using city and states with your keywords
So in conclusion that’s basic information in keyword research for beginners that you’re going to know during the SEO process.
Now you have that basic understanding I think.

  • CPC: The cost per click (CPC) is the amount that advertisers are paying for a single click for this keyword in Google AdWords.
  • Competition: The competition is a gauge of the number of advertisers that are running ads on Google AdWords for this specific keyword. The number goes from 0 to 1, with lower values signifying less number of advertisers and higher values signifying more advertisers.
